Annual Snowflake Luncheon

Tickets are available now for the Annual Snowflake Luncheon on Saturday, February 25 at the museum. The catered luncheon will be served on the museum's snowflake china. Entertainment will be provided by Mr. Christoper Delbridge. Doors will open at 11:30 am with the meal served at 12:15 pm and the entertainment at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for non-members and are available for purchase at the museum and Princeville State Bank. Advance ticket sales only! The museum recently received a donation from Princeville High School of Future Homemakers of America memorabilia including scrapbooks, certificates, photos, banners and much more. As most of you know, FHA is now FCCLA (Family, Community and Career Leaders of America). The name change occurred in 1999. Princeville High School has a long history of FHA and FCCLA. The above photo is from December 18th, 1957 for the annual Christmas Tea. Look at the ladies' hats, aren't they exquisite? The description in the yearbook is: Wednesday afternoon, December 18th, from 2 to 4 the F.H.A. had its annual Christmas Tea in the Home Economics Room. This tea is for all the mothers of the high school students. The freshman Home Ec. girls decorated the room and made the delicious cookies, open faced sandwiches and punch. Mrs. Dorothy Caldwell poured the punch and Christmas carols were played during the tea. The ladies in photos are not identified. From the description, we assume the lady at the punch bowl is Dorothy Caldwell. If you know any of the ladies in the pictures, please let us know.

This last photo is from the 1959-1960 yearbook. The members who wore costumes are Judy Graves, Colette Godsil, Mary Ann Kelly, Emma Sue Gilkeson, Joyce Rumbold, Mary Gilles, Marilyn Emery, Sharon Pullen, Sharon Kuhn. PHS Show Choir at Community Coffee

Today was the monthly Community Coffee at the museum. The Princeville High School Show Choir performed during the coffee. Mr. Chris Delbridge, Choir Director, led the students in an outstanding performance. The Princeville Heritage Museum would like to thank PHS, Mr. Delbridge and the Show Choir for the entertainment. It was a special treat to have them perform during the coffee. The next community coffee is on January 11, 2012 from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. As you can see by the pictures, the community coffee is a great time to visit with friends and neighbors.

Below are some pictures of the PHS Show Choir. These students have been working hard all semester, coming in early in the morning to practice. If you haven't been to a performance, you need to go see them.

One Room Schools

As you know, the restored Akron Townhouse School is on the museum grounds. The school was built in 1900. The last class in the schoolhouse was in 1958. The building was moved to the museum grounds in 2004. The Akron Townhouse school is just one of many one room schools in the area. In the archives, the museum has many photos, school books, report cards, grade books and other memorabilia from area one room schools. Just recently, we received a donation of two undated photos from Hawley School. Fortunately, the students' names were written on the back.

History of Boy Scouting in Princeville

This Sunday, October 23, there will be a program on The History of Boy Scouting in Princeville at the Princeville Heritage Museum. Steve Cantrell of Edelstein has done extensive research on Boy Scouting in Princeville and will be the guest speaker. Steve has loaned the museum some of his Boy Scout memorabilia to display. The program starts at 3:00 pm with desserts and coffee served after the presentation. This program is open to members and non-members. Please join us for this fun program!

Night At The Museum

Join the Princeville Heritage Museum for a Night At The Museum on September 17, 2011. Come enjoy dinner and live entertainment from President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Tickets are $25 per person for HAP Members and $30 for Non-Members; $175 for table of 8 for HAP Members and $200 for table of 8 for Non-Members. Heritage Harvest 2011

The 3rd Annual Heritage Harvest had a successful run this year. Kids were treated to Story Time by Lillie M. Evan Library, activites and games at the Akron Townhouse School, and a Kiddie Tractor Pull. The Pancake and Sausage Breakfast and Grill Lunch were both provided by the Princeville Lion's Club. There were a variety of vendors and displays that guests could be entertained with. Displays included: chainsaw carving by Tim Gill, horse-shoeing, wheat threshing, a blacksmith, saw mill demonstration, rescue demo, taxidermy display, a leather smith, and a Civil War Field Hospital!! Heritage Harvest would like to thank all its volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event possible!! Next years Heritage Harvest will be July 28, 2012.

May 31 is Peony Day in Princeville

Do you remember when Route 91 north of town was flanked by peony fields. They were the work of Edward Auten, Jr who was a well-known peony breeder. You can still find "Auten" peonies for sale which are named after Princeville's own Edward Auten. In 1981, Damon Griswold, Princeville Village President, signed a proclamation declaring the Village of Princeville as the "Peony Capital of the World". Do you have peonies growing in your yard? Did you know the history of Princeville and peonies? FFA Exhibit and Joe House Retirement Party

We are very excited about the upcoming retirement party for Mr. Joe House on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Princeville Heritage Museum.

In honor of Mr. House's retirement, the museum will be debuting a special FFA Exhibit at the retirement party. We have received lots of photos, including the one above. Do you know what year this was and any of the people in the photo? Help us identify former FFA members and comment on this post if you know any of the names.

Were you a Princeville High School FFA member? The museum is taking items on loan for this exhibit. If you have any items you would like to loan the museum, call the museum or stop by. The exhibit will be on display through July 2011.

Annual Spring Festival & Easter Egg Hunt

This Saturday, April 23, is the annual Spring Festival and Easter Egg Hunt at the museum. The Easter Bunny will be here to meet your children and pose for pictures. There will be games, crafts and refreshments. The Princeville Lion's Club will be hosting their Easter Egg Hunt on the museum grounds. The hunt starts promptly at noon at the noon whistle. Be sure to be here in plenty of time to get lined up prior to the noon whistle! We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

The archive volunteers at the museum are struggling to identify to some old photos. So, we thought if we posted them on the blog, then readers can help us identify some of these unknown photos. The photo I am posting today is a recent donation. We are not sure if it is a house in Princeville or one of the surrounding towns. The photo was taken by a photographer by the name of Kegebein who had a studio in Princeville. Please email us if you know where this house is located. On the back of the photo, "Fall 1901" is written.

Update: This house is currently the Hammitt Hott Funeral Home on the corner of Walnut and High St. The home has undergone many renovations.

Wine and Chocolate Tasting - February 12, 2011

Princeville Heritage Museum is hosting the 2nd Annual Wine and Chocolate Tasting on Saturday, February, 12, 2011. Tickets go on sale January 17th. Tickets are $20 per person ($15 for museum members) and are available at Princeville Heritage Museum and Princeville State Bank. Advanced tickets only. Limited Seating.

Guest are invited to enjoy and evening of sweet endulgence at the 2nd Annual Wine and Chocolate Tasting. Enjoy a selection of wine, chocolates and apetizers while listening to live Jazz Music by the Bradley Jazz Combo. There will be a cash bar and live auction to raise funds for the museum!

HUB Ballroom Tribute Dance

WOW!! What a great time! Princeville Heritage Museum hosted the HUB Ballroom Tribute Dance on Saturday, May 22. Guests cames from as far away as Rochelle, LaSalle, and Mahomet. The Eldon Hirstein Band Senior Moment performed and the Princeville Lion's Club did a great job on dinner.

Since the HUB Ballroom Exhibit opened at the Princeville Heritage Museum in March, the response has been outstanding. Visitors from all over Central Illinois have visited the museum to take a step back in time and remember the HUB Ballroom in its heyday.
Now the museum is excited to announce the HUB Ballroom Tribute Dance on Saturday, May 22. Many visitors to the HUB Exhibit mentioned how much fun it would be to have a dance at the museum to celebrate the history of the HUB.
So the date is set, the band is hired and tickets for this tribute dance are on sale. Eldon Hirstein’s Band Senior Moments will treat museum guests to Big Band, Latin and 40’s dance music.
The Princeville Lion’s Club will be grilling out for the event. Pork Chop and Ribeye Sandwiches along with all the fixings will be for sale from 4pm to 7pm. The museum will be selling souvenir HUB T-shirts and souvenir HUB booklets.
Tickets are $12 per person and $10 for museum members (museum members must purchase tickets at museum to receive discount). Tickets are available at Princeville Heritage Museum, Princeville State Bank and on-line at http://www.princevilleheritagemuseum.com/. Tickets are limited, so purchase your tickets early.

Another success!!! 2010 Hub Ballroom Exhibit - great job and thank you to everyone who participated!! It was a really great experience being there and being able to hear about some of the history of the HUB firsthand from those who were "there". The history of the HUB continued today as family and patrons remembered the good times they had at the HUB (and found themselves in one of the many photographs taken "back when") - if you didn't get a chance to stop at the grand opening of the exhibit today - please make a trip out to come and see everything. The HUB exhibit will be open until June 2010. Pictures of today's grand opening coming soon!

Heritage Harvest 2009 - A HUGE Success!!

The day started at 7 a.m. with a delicious pancake breakfast put on by the Lions Club of Princeville - YUM!

We also had a very successful raffle drawing with some neat prizes including but not limited to a group golf package and a complimentary custom photography session w/ session album!

The Akron Townhouse School was also open for the day with Mrs. Ann Cordis dressed a vintage school teacher complete with long skirts and all. We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful piece of history right here in Princeville for all to enjoy!

We sure had a packed house for our Lions Club lunch cookout! Porkchops, hotdogs, and burgers went fast along with the lemonade, chips, and homemade desserts.

Here is Joyce who donated her antique upright piano just in time for the Heritage Harvest. Apparently this thing weighs A LOT! :) Thank you Joyce!!

Akron-Princeville Fire Rescue Squad completing their vehicle rescue demonstration for all to see. Great job!! Thank you all for serving our community - we deeply appreciate your service and hard work!

All in all it was a great day with beautiful weather (thank goodness!) - many patrons (and some guests from as near as Chillicothe and Peoria to as far as Chicago!) came to enjoy some of our great history and support the Historical Association of Princeville. We thank you and hope you had as great a time as we did and hope you'll come back to visit soon!

We are beyond excited to announce that the plans for our Heritage Harvest 2009 are officially a GO!! Plan to bring your family to this day filled with FUN (and FOOD!) - Saturday, July 25, 2009. We are especially excited for the real threshing demonstration in addition to everything else that will be going on that day (just click on the flier to enlarge). It's going to be a fun-filled jam packed day! The Heritage Harvest begins with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. on the museum grounds. Come on out and visit us!

We also have raffle tickets for sale for some great prizes. Contact anyone you know that serves the Princeville Heritage Museum or just call Kelly and you can get some tickets. They are a $1 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5. You do not have to be present to win the big raffle. There will also be a second raffle that will require your presence to win. Thank you to everyone who donated items to the Princeville townwide garage sale (HAP location!) held on Saturday, May 16th from 8 - 2 p.m. Thank you also to those who rented a table to sell their own treasures. It was a bit chilly an damp after all the rain we had but all in all it was a great time!

As you can see, the 2009 Spring Festival at the HAP was a huge success!! Here we have Kathy Messersmith painting a beautifully artistic bunny face on of our participants. The kids had so much fun in the 5k School House Run (those who ran), getting their faces painted, searching for eggs in the Easter Egg hunt, and listening to spring/Easter stories in the museum at the end.

Hi there and welcome everyone!! As you can see we are keeping extremely busy at the Historical Association of Princeville or HAP!! Earlier this April we hosted the annual 5K School House Run/Walk and our first annual Spring Festival. Many came out to run and walk the 5K and had a great time. We had runners and walkers of all ages (young, younger, and youngest ;) and everyone finished well!

The HAP also put out a beautiful spread of fruits, cookies, water, and coffee for the runners and other guests attending. It was a bit breezy but we had been waiting on the sunshine for so long that we didn't mind the cool breeze.

The run/walk event started at 9 a.m. with the Spring Festival activities beginning around 10 a.m. The Easter Bunny and Ricky Racoon also made an appearance and had fun with all of our guests. Kathy Messersmith (our President) was kind enough to provide face painting for anyone who wanted it, there were Easter Egg pages to color and glitter, flowers to plant, an Easter Egg hunt, and finally Easter book story time. Rosie Siebenthal read some cute books about Easter and Spring to a very well behaved audience. The stories were enjoyed by all!

Many of you may have noticed Rosie Siebenthal with her camera taking (lots!) of pictures of the various events. There are two groups of images (those with adults and those with kids) and they are located in separate galleries on Rosie's business shopping cart. You may access the images to view and purchase at special HAP pricing with proceeds going to the HAP.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

1. HAP Spring Cleaning - Saturday, April 25, 2009 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Please come out and support the Historical Association of Princeville for...free!! Well, for your time and energy ;) We are looking for volunteers to come along side us and support the HAP in the way of time and service. There is work to be done with the landscape outdoors and cleaning and other jobs to be done indoors. If you are a high school student or know someone in high school this would be a great way to earn some community service hours!! Please pass the word!

2. Townwide Garage Sale at the HAP - Saturday May 16, 2009.

Bring items to donate to the museum for the sale OR rent your own table and sell your own wares. Tables are $25 for the first table and $10 for each additional table. Kelly has arranged for charity pickup after the event for items you wish to leave etc. Beverages, hotdogs, and desserts will be for sale also. Make sure you stop and see us if you are out on the town looking for deals!!

3. Heritage Days Open House - Will host an open house on the Saturday afternoon 1-3 p.m. of Heritage Days weekend. Come out and visit us!!

4. Heritage Harvest - Saturday, July 25, 2009 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Our biggest event yet (and we've had some doozies!! ;) The Heritage Harvest will feature our unique and live "Threshing Days" for all to see. Many other neat things are planned for this day - stay tuned as we announce the events in the near future!!

First Annual Snowflake Tea : Theme | Love Story

Congratulations to the board! The Historical Assocation of Princeville's 1st Annual Snowflake Tea was a huge success!! Snowflake china, a delecious meal, and many beautiful wedding dresses made for a wonderful afternoon for all the guests that attended. We are already looking forward to the 2010 Snowflake Tea and hope that can all make it!

Just a reminder everyone! On Saturday, February 28, 2009, the Historical Association of Princeville is hosting it's first annual February Event: The Snowflake Tea! This year's theme is *Love Story - Wedding Dresses Through the Years*. Jan Getz will also be debuting a number of her antique purses and hats. Tickets are $15 individually or $110 for a table of 8 and can be purchased by calling Kelly Jenkins our museum director @ 309.678.0736.

Welcome back :) Here we have some images from our December Christmas Coffee. If you missed it, don't worry - we'll be having some more. You can find out the dates over on the right where we've posted most of the events that we're planning for 2009. If you were able to make it - it was great having you!!

At the first Community Coffee at the PHM we enjoyed having the Mayor of Princeville, Mr. Sid Stahl and his lovely wife, Mary, among our many guests. It is really a neat thing to get together at the PHM with our neighbors (because we're all neighbors around here ;) and learning about them and some of the history of our town through their eyes.

The next Community Coffee will be on Thursday, January 15, 2009. Bring a friend - we'd love to see you there! It starts at 8:30 a.m. and goes until 11 a.m.

Holiday Homecoming 2008

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at the Princeville Heritage Museum!! The Holiday Homecoming was a huge success! Thank you to all who braved the weather to come and visit us at the museum and the school house and to those who so generously provided the beautiful and very tasty treats. The tractor - pulled wagon brought many visitors who came to enjoy the plethora of antique toys on loan from the Merlin Ghetz family out of Roanoke, IL. The Ghetz Family is also graciously allowing us to display their antique buggy and sleigh! Come out and see us soon for the next "PHM Coffee" on the third Thursday in January (and February) to learn more about these beautiful antiques and see them up close!

Also, in case you are wondering when the next event will be at the Princeville Heritage Museum, the 2009 Calendar of Events for the Princeville Heritage Museum is underway and will be available right here on the blog this coming January of 2009 and in the newsletter that will be going out. Please check back soon for new photos of the Christmas Coffee as well and any other special news and information we might have for you!

November Event: Pearl Harbor Presentation

On Sunday, November 16, 2008 we had the honor of attending Finch Stowell's Pearl Harbor presentation at the PHM. Mr. Stowell was there the day Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. He was stationed on the USS Oklahoma BB-37. We are so thankful for Finch and his willingness to share with our community the history that he lived. We are very fortunate to be able to hear about our nation's history firsthand. Let's keep Finch and all our veterans who are still with us and also those who have went before us in that devastating attack in our thoughts and prayers as we near the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor this year on December 7.

This week on November 25, 2008 we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking at the Princeville Heritage Museum at Ostrom Ave. Thank you to everyone for your support of the museum!

Upcoming event: The Princeville Holiday Homecoming on Sunday December 7, 2008 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. There will be homes in Princeville open for the Christmas walk and the PHM will be included!! Stop by for some refreshments and to see the display we will have on loan for the holidays. We will have the PHM decorated for Christmas complete with an extensive antique toy collection, a buggy from the 1890's, and a number of antique butter molds.

Here we have Russell at the Fall Family Fun event that was held at the Princeville Heritage Museum on October 25, 2008 from 3-6 p.m. We are so thankful to have an image with Russell and Mr. Mueller together because Mr. Mueller was actually the person who donated Russell to the PHM. Thank you to the PHM member who took this photo and sent it to us!! More updates with photos on the Fall Family Fun event coming soon.

November Event Coming Up: Membership Meeting and Pearl Harbor Presentation by Finch Stowell at the PHM. You won't want to miss this!! It's amazing that we have the opportunity to hear history come alive in our own backyard. Please check back for exact time and remember to invite a friend or two to come and see Mr. Stowell give his presentation.
